Healthcare Providers are the gatekeepers to patient access for cancer trials. Eight of ten patients who enroll in a cancer trial, do so because of a Healthcare Provider recommendation.

However, as a healthcare provider, my experience today searching for a clinical trial for my patients can often feel like searching for a flight without knowing if there are seats on the plane. It can be a frustrating and time-consuming process, and frankly, a complete waste of time.

We have previously published our research that shows patients from lower income areas travel significantly longer distances compared to patients from higher income areas in order to participate in cancer clinical trials. The majority of trial-related travel support for patients is available only after extensive eligibility screening procedures, follow-up appointments, and successful enrollment. Therefore, patients of lower socioeconomic status are forced to absorb the costs associated with travel prior to trial participation, a factor that contributes to sociodemographic inequities among trial participants today.
